Pets

During a major disaster your pets need to be looked after too. If you have family pets you will need to include them in your emergency planning.

HOW YOU CAN PREPARE YOUR PETS:

Before

  • Put a name tag on your pet's collar with your name, phone number and address.
  • Always have a well-identified carry box with a blanket or towel.
  • Keep an emergency supply of water and pet food.

During

  • If you are unable to take your pets with you, or if you have been ordered to leave your pets behind, you should release penned or secured animals.
  • During a flood, your pets can be placed in the roof space of your home with as much food and water left for them as is practical.
  • If you live on a farm open the internal farm gates, but do not let your animals have access to public roads.

After

  • If specialist people are on hand to visit your home for you, tell them where your animals are and how they can be identified.

Remember your animals may be more self-sufficient than you think.
